EGGLAND’S BEST EGGS ARE NOW CERTIFIED KOSHER NATIONWIDE BY THE ORTHODOX UNION
Kosher Certification Is One Part of Company’s Aggressive Efforts to Provide the Best Real Shell Egg for Consumers
KING OF PRUSSIA, PA—December 6, 1999 -- The Orthodox Union, the world’s largest kosher certification body, has certified Eggland’s Best’s nutritionally superior eggs kosher. The OU label will be printed on every Eggland’s Best carton to assure consumers they are buying kosher eggs. Eggland’s Best, Inc., is the leading developer of the nutritionally superior patented* real egg available at most supermarkets nationwide.
For certification every licensed producer of Eggland’s Best eggs demonstrated during an on-site inspection that it follows kosher laws that are spelled out in the Old Testament. Kosher is the Hebrew word for “fit” or “proper,” and it means an item conforms to biblical laws governing the selection and preparation of foods.
Charles T. Lanktree, Eggland`s Best president and CEO, said that "Eggland`s Best undertook the process for kosher certification as part of the company`s aggressive efforts to provide the best real shell eggs. "Our eggs have become an important staple in the diets of cholesterol conscious consumers and kosher certification is a recognized indication of the type of quality people want in their healthy diet," he said.
Lanktree said the company will sell more than 300 million Eggland’s Best this year alone and the company will continue to look for ways to improve the nutritional benefits of its egg. “Consumers who purchase kosher products are strongly motivated and are very loyal. They are concerned about quality and are members of a highly desirable market for Eggland’s Best eggs,” Lanktree said.
EB Hens Fed Patented, All Vegetarian Diet
Eggland’s Best hens are fed a strictly controlled, high quality all vegetarian diet that contains no animal fat, no animal by-products, and no recycled or processedfood. The all-natural feed contains only healthy grains, canola oil and Biotene™, a unique all natural supplement which includes rice bran, alfalfa meal, kelp and vitamin E. Eggland’s Best eggs are produced without hormones or antibiotics.
Because of this unique feed, one Eggland’s Best egg contains:
- 190 mg of cholesterol compared to 215 mg in an ordinary egg;
- 25 percent less saturated fat compared to an ordinary egg;
- A level of Omega 3 which is three times the amount in an ordinary egg;
- 7 times more vitamin E than an ordinary egg which accounts for 25 percent of a person’s daily requirement for vitamin E; and,
- 40 percent of a person’s daily iodine requirement compared to 15 percent in an ordinary egg.
Eggland’s Best is the only company with a nationally-branded whole egg granted approval to carry exchange list verification on its packaging from the American Diabetes and American Dietetic Associations. Consumers can exchange one large Eggland’s Best egg for one medium-fat or meat substitute.
The Industry’s Strictest Testing
Eggland’s Best eggs are subjected to the most rigorous testing in the shell egg industry. Data from more than 80,600 tests over the past three years confirm that Eggland’s Best eggs consistently exceed specifications for lower cholesterol, lower saturated fat and higher levels of Omega 3 compared to the amounts found in an ordinary egg. Three independent laboratories review and certify these findings.
Eggland’s Best regularly analyzes its eggs procured at random from supermarkets and producers in 50 cities. Feed samples are tested weekly.
To ensure that consumers are buying Eggland’s Best eggs, each egg is stamped with the red “EB” seal. Eggs are inspected by the USDA and are held to Eggland’s Best superior standards.
Kosher Market Grows at Record Pace
According to Integrated Marketing Communications, New York, Americans bought $45 billion worth of kosher products—including snacks, soft drinks and even beer—in 1997, up nearly 29 percent from $36 billion. The consulting firm projects sales will grow to $55 billion by the year 2000.
Observant Jews make up just 20 percent of the 10-million-buyer koshermarket. Muslims and other religions with dietary restrictions make up 30 percent. Vegetarian and lactose intolerant consumers make up 25 percent, and the other 25 percent are people who prefer kosher products because they may be healthier and of better quality.
