Eggland's Best Casserole Dish Competition at Iowa State Fair

Aug 17, 2009

DES MOINES, IA (08/17/2009)(readMedia)-- Iowa is famous for its corn and pork, but did you know that the state's egg producers lead the nation in annual production?

Creating a dish that shows off the egg was the challenge given to participants in the Eggland's Best Casserole Dish competition judged Friday at the 2009 Iowa State Fair.

Sue Olson of Des Moines won first place and $150 for Potato Ham Omelet Bake.

Lynn Jeffers of Jesup earned second place and $100 for Summer Strata and Cheryl Rogers of Ames claimed third place and $50 for Sweet N' Spicy Egg Bake.

Each entry was judged on taste, appearance and best use of Eggland's eggs.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the newly-renovated Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.

"State Fair Time" runs through August 23. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary. For more information, call 800/545-FAIR or visit iowastatefair.org.
