This recipe is awesome! I love chocolate cake.

  • Miles 22 Jan, 11:26 AM

What a fun and easy recipe. Bad for my chocoholicism though...

  • Lana 21 Apr, 04:09 PM

    yummmmmm.......chocolate cake....

  • Nancy 25 May, 08:40 PM

Do you LOVE chocolate cake? And don't want to make a whole big cake just to have a slice? Here's your answer.
    Enjoy!

  • Muriel 14 Aug, 10:23 AM

My cake didn't rise at all. It came out like a heavy pudding. Should I try adding baking powder (how much?) or whipping the the egg whites & adding separately?

  • Lainie Fiszer, Eggland's Best 14 Aug, 11:59 AM

Muriel, I'm not sure why your cake didn't rise. We tried it here in the Eggland's Best kitchen a few times and it came out fine each time, sometimes even rising slightly over the top of the mug. It may have a pudding texture in the middle (depending on what size mug you use) but the outside should definitely be like cake. If you try it again, please let us know how it comes out. If you add other ingredients and it comes out better, let us know that too.

I saw this in my Good Housekeeping magazine - what a fun recipe! I like the Betty Crocker Warm Delights, but this is better because it uses ingredients I already have. Thanks!

  • Steph 17 Aug, 10:41 AM

Very good, I did add 1/4 tsp instant coffee and dash of salt to enhance the chocolate flavor. Will definitely make again!

  • Jeannie 17 Aug, 12:26 PM

My husband and I loved this recipe and wondering if there's a way to make other flavors for those few, strange people who aren't fond of chocolate?

  • Muriel 23 Aug, 02:57 PM

I tried your recipe a couple more times with room temperature ingredients & all fresh ingredients but couldn't get the cake to rise much. I tried a third time & added 1/2 teasp. baking powder and put the batter in a small mixing bowl in the microwave. It did rise this time with a real cake texture, and is delicious. Thanks for the great recipe!

  • Jean 25 Aug, 07:28 AM

Cool and put on plate - Ha! A scoop of ice cream on top and you're ready to enjoy. I tried making it plain by adding another tablespoon of flour and omitting the cocoa and chocolate chips, but it came out sort of gummy - any suggestions?

  • Cindi 27 Aug, 11:47 PM

Really like this, I was thinking, some of the microwaves are 700 some or not, maybe the cook time would be longer for some. always cook it 2 min and 40 seconds. I was thinking of maybe adding butterscotch chips.

  • Elaine 30 Aug, 12:04 PM

Love this cake to make with kids. I put in a pinch of baking powder and made it in two paper coffee cups sprayed with Pam and it doubled in size. Great recipe but would love to see one for a yellow cake as well.

  • Kim 1 Sep, 02:22 AM

This looks great! I just found this website--so glad I did, looks as if there are some wonderful recipes here.

  • Christina 1 Sep, 12:10 PM

I used peanut butter chips and two tablespoons of brown sugar instead of the three white sugar. Yummy!

  • Emilee 2 Sep, 01:46 PM

this was great...I am allergic to milk, but rice milk worked great and I just skipped the chips.

  • Victoria 8 Sep, 07:00 PM

how can I make this more fudgy and les cakey?

  • Lainie Fiszer, Eggland's Best 11 Sep, 07:54 AM

Hi, Victoria. You might want to try adding a little chocolate syrup to the mix before microwaving? We're thinking that might make it more fudgy. Try it and let us know!

  • eve 20 Sep, 03:31 PM

This is incredible! I've made it twice in two days so it really is dangerous. Thank you! A++

  • Jill 8 Oct, 02:14 PM

Wow...so delicious. And very dangerous. I always have ALL of these ingredients on hand. When I made this the other night, I "frosted" it with a small amount of equal parts creamy PB and Hershey's chocolate syrup, which was amazing :-)

  • Jennifer 10 Oct, 10:22 PM

The texture of this cake is a little bit gummy, not perfect... but for being a recipe that you can make in less than five minutes, I can let that go. I added walnuts and a bit of instant coffee (thanks, Steph!) to mine. Fabulous for an on-the-spot chocolate craving!

  • di Anna 27 Oct, 03:03 AM

what size mug do I need to make this recipe for 1 slice chocolate cake?

  • Lainie Fiszer, Eggland's Best 2 Nov, 09:38 AM

We used a regular coffee mug. No special size needed!

  • st 29 Nov, 07:50 PM

Like some of the other comments, my cake 'did not' rise--the final product was heavy/pudding like. This was very disappointing.

  • Nellie 8 Dec, 10:44 AM

    Do you use self-rising flour?

  • Lainie Fiszer, Eggland's Best 9 Dec, 07:51 AM

We didn't use self-rising flour, but maybe you could? We used regular flour and it was just fine. Experiment, and let us know.

  • Jacob 10 Dec, 11:44 AM

Best thing i have ever made from the back of a coupon very tasteful if added graded hersheys chocolate bar.

  • Alicia 11 Dec, 01:40 PM

I didn't have any milk, so I used Bailey's liquor instead. It turned out really good.

  • Nora 14 Jan, 03:14 PM

    way too much sugar

  • Lainie Fiszer, Eggland's Best 15 Jan, 06:59 AM

Nora, you could try adding less sugar and see if it works. Maybe substitute a little apple sauce? Let us know. On the other hand, it's a sweet treat to be savored once in a while, so....

  • Erica 16 Jan, 11:14 AM

it was pretty good. but the chocolate chips sank to the bottom!

  • Cake girl 17 Jan, 08:22 PM

i LOVE cake. it is pretty awesome. even my mom approves

  • Laura 24 Jan, 08:39 AM

Muriel's issue may also be due to the wattage of her microwave!! Noting the wattage of the microwave(standard is 1100-1200) helps tremendously. There are still quite a few ones out there that are under 1100 watts; which means you have to cook the food longer!!! Just a thought.....

  • Cindy 25 Jan, 11:45 PM

I love this recipe... it reminds me of the chocolate pudding cake my mom made when I was a kid.

  • Neil 30 Jan, 04:20 PM

I made it with only 2 T sugar by mistake (most of the ingredients were 2 T) and it tasted just fine.

  • Frances Freeman 18 Apr, 10:33 AM

Wonderful recipe - added chopped walnuts- made this in a two-Cup glass measuring cup. MUST! let it cool down! then not so gooey (which I like anyway!) Top with coolwhip, ice cream adds to your delight. have posted recipe on bulletin board,at my sr. housing building. This is the nicest danger in my life - need more recipes for perhaps yellow with lemon flavors?

  • Lisa 21 Apr, 08:53 AM

Can i make this in a small individual ramekin? (maybe 2 or 3 for individual servings?)

  • Trish 27 Apr, 12:41 PM

Tried this recipe today and found it delicious and EASY. Omitted the chocolate chips and added 1 tablespoon of dark cocoa. Came out wonderful. Will try pecans or walnuts next time. Really great for a quick chocolate fix.

  • Jon 1 May, 07:05 PM

Okay guys make it 4 tbs sugar, 3 tbs cocoa and 1/4 tsp of baking powder and for kicks I also put in crumbled heath bar about 1 tbs magnific'

  • Angie 8 May, 10:53 PM

I just tried the recipie and my cake didn't have much taste at all. The texture was really spongy, all the chocolate chips were at the bottom. I really didn't like the blandness or the texture enough to even give it another shot. I must say that it did look good and even slid right out of the mug onto a plate but my spoon would bounce off of it. After about 5 minutes, you could have thrown it at the wall and knocked a hole in it.

  • Kris 15 May, 04:43 PM

Sounds really yummy, haven't tried it yet but was wondering if anything could substitute the oil, I have used yogurt in brownies and apple sauce in cakes for the oven but was wondering if this could work for the microwave

  • Jess 23 May, 09:35 PM

What a wonderful recipe. It is a little dense but its a great quick chocolate cake fix, cause I crave this A LOT! Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to share this with my mom and friends!

  • JOYCE 5 Jun, 02:09 PM

Thanks for this recipe! Tastiest and easiest "mug" cake I have tried!! So easy to put together at the last minute for a quick dessert while dinner is cooking. I add espresso powder to boost the chocolate flavor. I found sprinkling a bit of flour with the chips before adding to the mixture keeps them from sinking to the bottom of the cake. Mine doesn't always come out the same. Sometimes it is a bit "gooey", but like pudding cake then.Removing it from the mug so it doesn't "steam" helps also. Heath Bits added are also good along with some nuts!! Great with ice cream or whipped topping or even hot fudge! Just right for two.
