Easy Pumpkin-Shaped Cake Balls
These cake balls are beginner-friendly and easy to make! They look like cute little pumpkins, but they're made with an orange cake that everyone loves. They pop with color and flavor!
Ingredients
Cake
1 3-oz. package orange gelatin
2/3 cup hot water
2/3 cup canola oil
3 Large Eggland’s Best eggs
1 box yellow cake mix
Glaze
3 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup of orange juice
Candy Coating
24 oz candy melts (you won't use it all, but it's nice to have extra for dipping the cake balls in)
oil-based food coloring (or, use orange candy melts)
green sprinkles
15 pretzel sticks
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350 and prep a 9”x13” pan. Dissolve the gelatin in the hot water. Add the oil, eggs, and cake mix. Beat 3 minutes.
- Pour into 9x13 cake pan and make for 30 minutes (keep an eye on it, you don’t want it overdone).
- While the cake is cooking, prepare the glaze. Mix the powdered sugar and the orange juice to a consistency that can be poured.
- While the cake is still hot, poke holes in it using a knife or fork. Make holes every 2 or 3 inches. Pour the glaze over the hot cake and be sure it runs down into the holes you made.
- Let the cake cool completely, and then transfer to a large mixing bowl. Use your hands to crumble it all up, and then form into balls (about 1 tablespoon each in size). You should get between 25-30 cake balls.
- Chill in refrigerator for at least an hour.
- Prepare candy coating per instructions on package. You can buy orange candy melts, or use an oil-based food coloring to make it orange.
- Once prepared, set the cake balls on a fork and dip in the candy coating one at a time. Let the coating drip off the cake ball.
- Transfer to a baking sheet covered in parchment paper. Immediately add sprinkles and half a pretzel stick for the stem.
- Chill cake balls for a few minutes before eating. Store in fridge. Enjoy!
